A FAMILY ORIENTED ACTIVITY

Join us for Spring Fest 2014 at Charlotte's Quest Nature Center on Sunday, May 4, 2014. The day of learning and fun for people of all ages begins at noon and best of all...there is no entrance or parking fee. Bring your entire family. Enjoy Reptile Wonders as they share their unique critters. Visit Kids Corral and take a turn in our two offered moon bounces. Make a gift for Mother or buy her a special plant for Mother's Day from Manchester's local garden center, Forever Green. Try your hand at one of our games for a small fee. Dave Thomen of D's Magic will be on hand from 2 - 3:45 PM. A fishing clinic will take place down at Walnut Pond at select times throughout the day. There will be live animals, music by school bands and exhibits to interest both young and old. High Ridge 4H Club is again offering minimally priced pony rides and their petting farm and Power Take-Off 4H Club is providing refreshments. Come support Charlotte's Quest and these local organizations. On hand, exhibits by such local groups as Carroll County Master Gardeners, Carroll County Forestry Board, Firewise, Astronomical Society, Christian Farmers Outreach, Manchester Police Auxiliary, and Special Olympics. McDaniel Honey Farm will offer their delightful local honey products. Learn how to play the up and coming popular game of Bocce. Loads of fun for everyone.

Nominal fees for select activities, refreshments and pony rides support the teaching at Charlotte's Quest Nature Center and aids participating groups and vendors.

2013 BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENTS WINNERS

The Fourth Annual October Classic is history. Never has there been so many player changes, most on the fly. I even had to replace an entire team that was in the winners bracket. The four replacement players were at the tournament as spectators and finished the tournament. It was perfect weather. The courts could have used some rain earlier, but it was equal to everyone.

Our contests were popular with 48 chances made for gift cards. Winners include:

  • Closest to Pallino Category: Phil Boone who received a Gift Card from Spargos
  • Closest to Pallino Using Side Boards Category: Walt Green, who received a Gift Card from Dutch Country Restaurant
  • Closest to End Board Category: Dennis Straus, with a Gift Card from Greenmount Station Restaurant received

Winner of the Eclairs from Dutch Corner Restaurant: Sharon Hooper and Dennis Straus

Thanks to Brothers Pizza for the Special October Classic Sub for $4.00. I am sure Andy will be pleased when 80 people come into claim their prize.

Special appreciation goes out to the set-up crew, Bill Skinner and Tom Smith, who set up tables, tents and parking lines and also to our referees, Steve Hobbs and Rod Brett, who really help keep things going. We are grateful to Jimmy and Barry who filled in to finish.

The food, as usual, was the best. Temple 35 Pythian Sisters #229 have this down so well. They come in like a hurricane and go out like a tornado. We cannot thank you enough for preparing delicious foods and beverages for our players and spectators.

The clean up was perfect. Tents, tables put away by Bill, Tom and Rod with my wife Pat clearing and storing. Everything done. Nothing left for Sunday but to relax and remember a season well done, knowing that Charlotte's Quest Nature Center was gifted with more than $2800 this year.

Ciao,
Vince and Pat

TRAILS

Pine Valley Park is home to around 4.5 miles of overlapping trails. Find two copies of our map. One has shading to indicate the forested areas but does not print as well. We are still in the process of fixing this glitch. You may print either one or both to aid you on your hikes.

RABIES CASE NOTED IN MANCHESTER

NOTICE

Please be cautious any unknown animal. Recently, rabies was found in a feral cat in the Manchester area. Please advise children to look at animals from a distance and if any appear to be acting strangely, please slowly back away.

Ticks are plentiful this year. Check families periodically, especially after walking through the woods or tall grasses. Remember, pets may bring these insects into your homes as well. If you have pets, please check them often, you may even want to get into the habit of checking your loved ones every evening.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING POLICY

All educational programs require 7 registrants for the classes to run. Please register no later than 2 days prior to the scheduled class.

If the class does not have at least 7 registrants by the Thursday evening prior to the program, the class will be cancelled.
