Welcome to Charlotte's Quest Nature Center

2014 BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENTS

The second of three bocce tournaments, held to support the Charlotte's Quest Nature Center in Manchester, was held on Saturday, August 2. The tournament started at 8:30 with a total of 19 teams scheduled to play double elimination. Marios, winners of a previous Charlotte's Quest tournament, were undefeated and took 1st place. A new team. Lynne's Gang, was second place winners, and an additional team that has played in several tournaments, without a place, Senatori, came in third. The tournament was very competitive and featured exciting games that were close with players making challenging rolls in every game. A unique situation was featured in the prime time 1 P.M. winners bracket game, when two teams, Lynnes Gang, featuring Lynne Sneeringer, her daughter, Lisa, son Johnny and Lisas' husband Josh, met Susies Gang, composed of Susan Fowble, her daughter Julie, Emma Getty, and Rick Micoli. Susan and Lynne are sisters and the game soon became known as 'The Battle of the Sisters' . with many of the players and friends attending stopping to watch the 'friendly' match, which was won by Susies Gang. However, in the end, Lynnes Gang survived several games in the losers bracket to lose to Marios in the final game and take second. Ellen Rugemer, chairperson of the Charlottes Quest board, when all the proceeds were totaled, announced to the teams that enough funds had been made that day that a new sign, planned to be placed at the entrance to the center on York Street in Manchester, could now be purchased. As always, delicious food was provided by volunteers of the Westminster Knights of Pythias, which donate all proceeds to Charlottes Quest. The final tournament is scheduled for October 4 and will feature contests that players can compete in to win prizes for the best point toss common in every bocce game. Registration forms can be filed at the CharlottesQuestNatureCenter web site or by calling 410-374-6193 for more information.

TRAILS

Pine Valley Park is home to around 4.5 miles of overlapping trails. Find two copies of our map. One has shading to indicate the forested areas but does not print as well. We are still in the process of fixing this glitch. You may print either one or both to aid you on your hikes.

RABIES CASE NOTED IN MANCHESTER

NOTICE

Please be cautious any unknown animal. Recently, rabies was found in a feral cat in the Manchester area. Please advise children to look at animals from a distance and if any appear to be acting strangely, please slowly back away.

Ticks are plentiful this year. Check families periodically, especially after walking through the woods or tall grasses. Remember, pets may bring these insects into your homes as well. If you have pets, please check them often, you may even want to get into the habit of checking your loved ones every evening.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING POLICY

All educational programs require 7 registrants for the classes to run. Please register no later than 2 days prior to the scheduled class.

If the class does not have at least 7 registrants by the Thursday evening prior to the program, the class will be cancelled.
