2014 BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENTS

A flooded bocce court welcomed the first players to the October Classic Bocce Tournament on Saturday October 4, 2014. This was the last of three tournaments held for the benefit of Charlotte's Quest Nature Center, located in Manchester. Throughout the week, weather forecasts predicted a front to arrive by Friday with rain, wind, and colder temperatures extending into Saturday morning. The forecasters delightedly reported, repeatedly, that the foul weather would not affect a certain baseball game scheduled on Friday afternoon. To them, The Bocce Tournament in Manchester on Saturday was of no concern. But the Bocce gods would not be denied, nor would the 19 teams of bocce fanatics, as the tournament, delayed by flooded courts that were drained by a Sears shop vac, went on. At the end of the day, a new October Classic Winner prevailed over last years previous winner, Marios. The team of Pallino Grigio, with Berry Ledford, Jody Ledford, Audrey Boyle and Steve Boyle from Westminster, went undefeated, with a final game win over Marios.

As is usually the case in this family oriented game of bocce, many games featured family members on opposing teams and this tournament was no exception. When the new team, National Boccehemians, organized by Danny Ledford, faced his parents in a game to decide at least third place, his father was heard to say, "Good luck son, you're going to need it".

This tournament is unique in that it features contests that award winners gift cards from local businesses. The winner of the contest featuring closest to the pallino, was Vito Bellafiore who won a gift card from Spargos with a toss of 7 1/4 inches. Closest to the pallino, using the sideboard, was Steve Boyle who was awarded a gift card from Country Kitchen with a toss of 7 inches. Winner of the contest featuring, closest to the end board, was also Steve Boyle with an award of $25 from Millers Grocery in Manchester, with a toss of 71/4 inches. A total of 51 players participated in the three contests. Tournament dates for 2015 are June 20: August 15: and October 3. Inquires can be made at 410-374-6193.

TRAILS

Pine Valley Park is home to around 4.5 miles of overlapping trails. Find two copies of our map. One has shading to indicate the forested areas but does not print as well. We are still in the process of fixing this glitch. You may print either one or both to aid you on your hikes.

RABIES CASE NOTED IN MANCHESTER

NOTICE

Please be cautious any unknown animal. Recently, rabies was found in a feral cat in the Manchester area. Please advise children to look at animals from a distance and if any appear to be acting strangely, please slowly back away.

Ticks are plentiful this year. Check families periodically, especially after walking through the woods or tall grasses. Remember, pets may bring these insects into your homes as well. If you have pets, please check them often, you may even want to get into the habit of checking your loved ones every evening.
